Social Networkaholics
Have you Tweeted today? Logged on to Facebook? Or even gone old school and Myspaced? It doesn’t seem long ago that everyone was creating a Myspace account and becoming friends with Tom Anderson, the site’s president. That was in 2003, the following year, Facebook was created by a Harvard student and became the hot new Social Network site for collegeates and eventually the online world in general. Most recently, Twitter has come about as a celebrity favorite. Without a doubt, these sites have helped many find jobs, friends, and even romance. But what does it mean to be a Social Networkaholic? As the sites have evolved, they have changed so that not only are you able to update your status about what you’re doing every hour, but you’re encouraged. Now you don’t have to feel like a cyber-stalker while analyzing you’re friends comments, they’re shown right on your home page. And of course, if, God forbid, you should be seperated from a computer long enough to feel withdrawals, you can always purchase the Mobile Application for your cell phone. Withdrawals may seem a far fetch for older generations; however, for the cyber-aged generation, internet addiction is not odd at all, in some circles it may even be normal. What drives young people to crave cyber socializing depends on the person. For many, their over interest may simply be a product of boredom, for some though, it can be more serious. A select group of people may seek and find approval from the sites through new friend requests or photo comments. Previous generations have suffered from overwork or alcoholism, but is our future downfall that of being Social Networkaholics?
